Online shopping is handy, but it will never hand you a dusty box of HO track or a vintage pedal car you forgot existed. Arizona still has real brick-and-mortar hobby shops where model railroaders, kit builders, and toy collectors can browse shelves in person and talk shop with people who know their stuff.
Some focus only on trains, some fix locomotives, and some stock everything from rockets to sci-fi kits. Here are six spots from Tucson to Kingman that make it easy to lose an hour and leave with something you did not expect.
1. Arizona Hobbies, Tucson, AZ

Railroad books are the sleeper hit at this south Tucson shop. Arizona Hobbies opened in 1998 with a focus on model trains and railroad literature, and that history still shapes what you find on the shelves.
It is also one of the last stores in the area carrying HO and N gauge model railroading supplies. For Tucson layout builders, that alone makes it a key stop.
Over the years the inventory has grown to include scale models, rockets, kites, tools, and paints. You will also find R/C cars, trucks, and airplanes.
Hours are a little unusual, so plan ahead. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday, open late until 7 PM on Thursday, and closes at 1 PM on Saturday.
There is a free on-site parking lot at 3600 S Palo Verde Rd, and the online shop offers in-store pickup if you want to order first.
2. Hobby Depot, Tempe, AZ

Plan to bring a list, then plan to ignore it. Hobby Depot on East Southern Avenue in Tempe is packed floor to ceiling with plastic model kits, model railroad supplies, paints, adhesives, and hobby tools.
The kit selection is the big draw. The store keeps quality high-end model kits on hand, and the pricing stays reasonable, which is not always the case with premium kits.
Beyond trains and plastic models, you will find rockets and slot cars. That mix makes it a handy one-stop shop for builders who bounce between projects.
Hobby Depot is open seven days a week, with Sunday hours from noon to 5 PM. I would save this one for a weekend afternoon when you have time to scan every shelf.
3. 66 Trains, Kingman, AZ

A trains-only hobby store just off historic Route 66 is about as fitting as it gets. 66 Trains sits at 111 N 2nd St in Kingman and specializes in HO and N scale model trains.
Train stores are scarce across rural northwest Arizona. For Mohave County modelers, having a dedicated shop nearby saves a long haul to Phoenix or Las Vegas.
The shop is also an authorized Walthers dealer, which helps when you need specific track, structures, or parts.
Keep the schedule in mind. 66 Trains is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM, with free street parking out front. It pairs nicely with a Route 66 road trip through downtown Kingman.
4. Smilinjacks Vintage Toys, Trains & Pedal Cars, Glendale, AZ

Nostalgia gets its own storefront on Glendale Avenue. Smilinjacks carries vintage action figures, doll houses, trains, pedal cars, and all kinds of classic toys aimed squarely at collectors.
The mix goes beyond trains, with model planes and ships also in the lineup. It is the kind of shop where you might come in for a locomotive and leave holding a toy from your childhood.
Items are nicely displayed and clearly priced, so browsing is easy and there is no guessing game. Prices on quality collectibles are fair, which makes it a strong alternative to scrolling auction sites.
Smilinjacks is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and closed Sunday. Give yourself at least an hour.
5. Hobby Bench (Bell Road), Glendale, AZ

Late hours are a gift for hobbyists who work a day job, and Hobby Bench delivers. The Bell Road store stays open until 8 PM on weekdays.
This long-standing shop sells model electric trains in multiple scales. It also stocks kits spanning military, aircraft, cars, ships, and sci-fi.
RC fans get a large inventory of cars and planes. Layout builders can grab scenery supplies, paint, and crafting materials in the same trip.
Saturday afternoons get busy. If you want quieter aisles, Monday or Wednesday morning is a better bet.
Sunday hours run 11 AM to 5 PM, and in-store pickup is available at 4240 W Bell Rd.
6. Blue Flag Model Trains, Tucson, AZ

Got a locomotive that runs like it needs a nap? Blue Flag Model Trains in Tucson is both a model train store and a repair shop.
The specialty here is DCC. The shop installs and upgrades decoders, which helps older locomotives work with modern digital control layouts.
Repair and paint work is also part of the service. That makes it a smart stop for collectors bringing a worn or damaged piece back to life.
Blue Flag is open Tuesday through Friday and closed on weekends, with Wednesday hours ending at 4 PM. Find it at 1634 S Research Loop Ste 170, with free on-site parking.
Calling ahead before dropping off a project is a good idea.
