Indiana has more water than people give it credit for. Between the Lake Michigan shoreline, the bends of the Ohio River, and a few reservoirs and creeks, the state is full of spots where you forget what you were saying.
This list mixes a dune-lined state park, bluff-top dining rooms, a college overlook, a downtown riverfront, and a creek with the biggest waterfall in the state. Some are places to eat, some are places to wander, and a couple are both.
A few are free to enjoy, and most are open every day. Pick one for a weekend drive, a family outing, or a long lunch with a window seat.
Here are seven Indiana waterfront stops that give you a reason to pause.
1. Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, IN

Sunset is the headline here, when the sand dunes of Lake Michigan take on a golden color. The park sits at 1600 N 25 E in Chesterton and is open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM.
Hiking, swimming, fishing, birding, and cross-country skiing all share the grounds, and there are campsites for longer stays. Trails run through forest and over the dunes, and kid-friendly hikes plus a playground keep younger visitors busy.
Weekends, especially Saturday and Sunday afternoons, are the busiest times. Monday and Wednesday nights are the quietest, so a midweek visit gives you more room on the beach and the shaded trails.
Picnic tables, barbecue grills, restrooms, swings, and cycling lanes are on site. Dogs are allowed, and parking includes both free and paid options.
2. The Overlook Restaurant, Leavenworth, IN

Leavenworth has a population under 400, yet its bluff-top restaurant looks out over a full bend in the Ohio River. The dining room is full of windows, so the view reaches across the water to Kentucky farmland.
The menu leans classic Midwest comfort food. Beef Manhattan, Chicken Pot Pie, a Fried Chicken Dinner, Country Fried Steak, and a Pork Tenderloin Sandwich all show up, and the Hot Brown is available as a vegetarian option.
Homemade coconut cream pie and bread pudding cover dessert.
Patio seating adds another way to take in the river. Hours are 11 AM to 7 PM daily, reservations are accepted, and the parking lot is free.
Dogs are allowed on the outdoor seating.
3. Scenic View Restaurant, Bloomington, IN

Brunch fans should check the calendar first, because this one is closed Monday through Thursday. It opens Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM.
The reward is a high vantage point over Lake Monroe and the Hoosier National Forest, visible from the patio or from indoor booths. The address is 4600 State Hwy 446 in Bloomington.
The menu stays casual and affordable. Eggs Benedict, Biscuits and Gravy, and Fish Tacos are among the highlights, and there are full vegetarian and vegan menus.
Reservations are accepted, and parking is free. Dogs are allowed outside, and a kids’ menu and high chairs make it workable for families.
4. The Point, Hanover, IN

Sometimes the best view is simply where the road runs out. At the end of College Avenue on the Hanover College campus, a bluff drops away high above the Ohio River.
There is no ticket, menu, or schedule to worry about, since the spot is listed as open 24 hours. Saturday morning tends to be its busiest time, while many other stretches of the week are quiet.
Hanover is a historic college community, so the stop pairs well with a slow walk around campus. For anyone who likes a view without any extras, this is the plain and free pick on the list.
5. Rick’s Café Boatyard, Indianapolis, IN

Eagle Creek Reservoir gives Indianapolis a lakeside dining room, and this one adds a jazz club to the mix. The address is 4050 Dandy Trail, and the restaurant leans toward seafood.
Menu highlights include Seafood Chowder, Tempura Fried Calamari with Ancho Chili Aioli, Shrimp and Scallop Linguine, Crab Stuffed Orange Roughy, Baked Goat Cheese, and the Boatyard Burger. A Grilled Fisherman’s Catch rounds out the water-themed options.
Hours run 11 AM to 10 PM Monday through Saturday and 10 AM to 10 PM on Sunday, with brunch served. Outdoor seating is available, and dinner and brunch reservations are recommended.
Parking is free, with valet available. Evenings on Saturday and Sunday are the busiest times.
6. Cataract Falls State Recreation Area, Spencer, IN

Indiana’s largest waterfall is in Owen County, and it comes in two parts. Upper and lower falls sit along Mill Creek, with a historic covered bridge nearby.
The walk between them is an easy trail of about 2 miles round trip. Shaded paths keep it comfortable, and short hikes around the area give other angles on the falls.
The park is at 2605 N Cataract Rd in Spencer and is open daily from 6 AM to 9 PM. Sunday afternoon is the busiest time, while weekday mornings and evenings are quieter.
There is a playground, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. Fishing spots are close by, dogs are allowed, and parking includes free and paid lots.
7. Promenade Park, Fort Wayne, IN

Downtown Fort Wayne gets its own riverfront playground here. The park runs along the St. Marys River at 202 W Superior St and is open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM.
An elevated walkway gives a view over the water and the landscape. A stream where kids can play, a playground, ping pong and foosball tables, corn hole, and porch-style swings fill out the grounds.
Kayak and canoe rentals plus a kayak launch put visitors on the river itself. A waterfront concert venue hosts events, and walking and bike trails connect through the park.
Picnic areas and restrooms are on site, and dogs are allowed. Parking options include free lots and street spots as well as paid garages.
