8 Little California Seafood Shacks Worth Building a Whole Coastal Road Trip Around

Some of the best meals on the California coast come out of tiny counters, takeout windows, and harbor shacks with picnic tables out front. This list follows Highway 1 and the harbors along it, from the oyster country of Tomales Bay all the way down to Malibu.

Each stop serves real seafood with real views, and most of them skip the fancy stuff entirely. Plan your route around these eight, and the drive starts to feel like one long, delicious lunch.

1. The Marshall Store, Marshall, CA

Grilled oysters are the headline at this little bayside stop, and they earn the spotlight. The Marshall Store sits right on Highway 1 along Tomales Bay, which makes it an easy pull-over on a Marin County coastal drive.

The menu leans into local shellfish. You will find raw oysters on the half shell, smoked oysters, Oysters Rockefeller, and a creamy New England clam chowder.

When Dungeness crab is in season, the big crab sandwich is the one to grab.

Not into shellfish? Fish tacos and a tri-tip sandwich are on the menu too, and the shop also sells smoked meats by the pound.

Ordering happens at the counter, and seating is mostly at outdoor tables near the water. Dogs are welcome, which is handy on a long road trip.

Timing matters here. Hours run 11 AM to 3 PM on weekdays and until 4 PM on weekends, there are no reservations, and a wait is common.

I would roll in early and treat this as your first big stop heading north.

2. Spud Point Crab Company, Bodega Bay, CA

Bodega Bay has plenty of places selling crab, so it says something that this tiny counter on Westshore Road pulls people off the highway. Spud Point Crab Company sits across from the marina, a short detour from Highway 1.

Clam chowder is the big draw. The menu calls it World Famous Chowder, and you can get red or white versions alongside sourdough bread.

Crab sandwiches, crab cakes, and crab or shrimp cocktails round out the core of the menu. Fish tacos and calamari and chips are there too.

A practical note: this is a basic takeout shack with outdoor seating and no restroom. Many visitors carry their food out toward the end of the peninsula to eat with a view of the Pacific.

It opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Weekend afternoons get busy and parking can be tight, so a weekday morning stop is the smoother play.

3. Princess Seafood Restaurant, Fort Bragg, CA

Noyo Harbor is a working fishing harbor, and Princess Seafood sits right on it, tucked under the bridge with boats bobbing nearby. If you are already in Fort Bragg for Glass Beach, this is the natural lunch move.

The menu is all about local catch done simply. Think Dungeness crab roll sandwiches, a West Coast crab roll, Dungeness crab Louie, and oysters.

Lighter options stand out here too. The octopus and bay shrimp ceviche, seared ahi rice bowl, and prawn rice bowl give it a different flavor than the usual fried basket.

Ordering is at the counter, and there is waterfront outdoor seating plus live music at times. Families get high chairs and a kids’ menu.

Check the calendar before you go. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open only until 3 PM on Monday, and runs into early evening the rest of the week.

4. Barbara’s Fishtrap, Half Moon Bay, CA

Fish and chips fans, this is your pilgrimage. Barbara’s Fishtrap is a small, family-owned seafood spot on Capistrano Road near Pillar Point Harbor, overlooking the water just north of Half Moon Bay.

The fish and chips are the classic order, and you can ask for the fish broiled instead of fried. Calamari, steamed clams, fresh-made clam chowder, and a Dungeness crab sandwich fill out the menu.

Save room for dessert. Key lime pie and carrot cake are both on offer, which is a nice twist for a fish shack.

Unlike most stops on this list, Barbara’s has table service. The space is tiny, with indoor and outdoor seating, and dogs are allowed outside.

It is open for both lunch and dinner with a short break from 3 to 4 PM. No reservations are taken and weekends get busy, so a weekday lunch is the calmer bet.

5. Sea Harvest Moss Landing, Moss Landing, CA

Keep one eye on your plate and the other on the water, because sea otters are a regular sight near Moss Landing. Sea Harvest sits right on Highway 1 with a deck looking out over the harbor and Elkhorn Slough.

Fresh fish is the focus. Halibut, rockfish tacos, fried shrimp, calamari, and fish and chips are all popular picks.

The clam chowder comes in a bowl or a mini bread bowl. Want something lighter?

A shrimp Louie salad or Caesar salad works well.

Service is counter-style, and the setup is easygoing for families with high chairs and a kids’ menu. Dogs are welcome outside.

Hours are generous, from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekdays and until 8 PM Friday through Sunday. That makes it a handy stop between Santa Cruz and Monterey at almost any time of day.

6. Giovanni’s Fish Market And Galley, Morro Bay, CA

Morro Rock makes a pretty great lunch companion. Giovanni’s sits along the Embarcadero at 1001 Front Street, with views of the harbor and that famous rock.

Part fish market and part galley, it lets you shop for fresh daily catches or grab a meal from the takeout window.

The signature orders are the fish and chips and the award-winning clam chowder. It is a long-running waterfront business, and the market side makes it different from a typical lunch counter.

I like this stop because it works two ways. Eat by the water now, or pick up fresh fish for a vacation rental dinner later.

It is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, with free parking nearby. Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds.

7. Splash Café, Pismo Beach, CA

Ask anyone on the Central Coast about chowder, and Splash Café tends to come up fast. This small, beachy spot near the Pismo Beach pier has turned the clam chowder bread bowl into a road trip ritual.

Chowder comes by the cup or in a bread bowl. The menu also covers a lobster roll, fried fish tacos, a seafood combo, and the Shrimp Slo Boy.

Burgers and hot dogs keep non-seafood eaters happy, and there is a vegan veggie burger. It also opens at 9 AM for breakfast, with breakfast burritos on hand.

At $10 to $20 per person, it is the budget-friendly pick on this list. Counter service keeps things moving.

Expect a line on weekends and limited parking downtown. Walking over from the pier is the easiest approach.

8. Malibu Seafood, Malibu, CA

End the drive where sunset meets fish tacos. Malibu Seafood sits right on Pacific Coast Highway, with picnic tables up top looking out over the Pacific and the Santa Monica Mountains behind.

It is a working fish market and a no-frills cafe at the same time. Fish and chips, fish tacos, grilled mahi mahi, and a lobster roll with cole slaw are menu staples.

Crab salad and Dungeness crab with bay shrimp add some variety. The chowder bowl is another solid pick on a cool coastal evening.

Order at the counter, then grab a seat under the umbrellas. Covered outdoor seating helps on sunny afternoons.

It runs daily from 11 AM to 8 PM, and weekends bring a wait. A weekday stop near sunset is my favorite way to close out the trip.

Eight shacks, one coastline, and plenty of chowder in between. Save this list, pick your route, and let lunch decide where you stop next.
