Packing Tips to Make Holiday Travel Less Stressful [Plus a Giveaway!]42 SharesShare25Pin17TweetFlipThis post was written in cooperation with Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus, all opinions are my own.Do you travel for the holidays? Since all our family live in other states, we are always on the road for Christmas and we sometimes also squeeze in some family vacation time during the long holiday break. After 16 years of packing up for holiday travel, I have learned a few tips to make packing easier. After all, the holidays are busy and stressful enough between holiday cards, gift shopping and wrapping, baking, cooking, decorating, partying, and everything else that goes into making the holidays “fun.” The last thing you need is stress over packing as well.Holiday Travel Packing Tips1 – Ship your gifts.Years ago I loved going Christmas shopping. I was one of those Black Friday shoppers looking for the deals. After the shopping was done, I put aside one night to listen to Christmas music and wrap presents. Those were all then lovingly transported down to New Jersey, taking up half of the trunk space. Or, they were squeezed into suitcases and flown to Florida. No more. Mama doesn’t have time for that. That is what Amazon is for. Use your Prime shipping perks to send gifts directly to your destination and wrap it on site. This is easy if you are staying with friends and family. However, if you are staying at a hotel, contact them in advance to see if they can accept shipments. If not, see if there is an Amazon Locker location nearby.Just remember, if you do need to pack some gifts, don’t wrap them if you are flying, especially in your carry on! There is a good chance they will need to be opened at security.2 – Leave space in your luggage.Don’t forget that while you will be unloading your gifts, if you are visiting family and friends you will also likely be getting some in return. You don’t want to pay overweight or extra bag charges just to bring gifts home so plan ahead. And if you are vacationing over the holidays and you have shipped gifts ahead, those gifts need to make their way back home with you too!3 – Be prepared.Holiday travel is also the middle of cold and flu season. We have suffered from stomach bugs, colds, and ear infections when on the road in December. It isn’t fun, especially when the pharmacies are closed for the holidays. Make sure you pack some portable medications – just in case! You also need to be prepared for unexpected weather. We have had to shovel our car out of the snow in flats and dress shoes because that is all we brought along. We have been in Florida during an unexpected cold front and froze. And we have also returned home from sunny Florida to two-feet of snow that we had to walk through and drag suitcases through before we could head back out to shovel. I know everyone likes to pack light, but it really helps to be prepared.4 – Be a smart packer!Unless you are vacationing in a tropical destination, packing for holiday travel probably means some bulky sweaters and maybe even some snow gear. Of course you will also want some of your holiday finery for parties, dinners out, or going to grandma’s house. To fit everything in, I typically use compression cubes for those bulky items and roll everything else. It is amazing how much more you can fit in a suitcase when you roll, but this works much better with lightweight clothing versus sweaters and bulky items. Of course squeezing it all in always may lead to a few wrinkles. This is where I turn to Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus. I HATE to iron but I have found that if I hang my garment up, spray on some Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus, give it a tug, and smooth it down with my hands, the wrinkles come out without hauling out the ironing board.
