Turn Holiday Shopping into a Girl’s Getaway at Foxwoods Resort

I remember the days when I lovingly purchased a present for each person on my holiday list, spending time thinking carefully about what would make them happy. Those days seem like so long ago. Today, holiday shopping can be stressful and turn into more of a chore than a joy.

This past weekend, I was given a chance to turn holiday shopping around and change my grinch face into a happy face with a girl’s getaway day at Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut. Suddenly it dawned on me, holiday shopping is a chance to reconnect with friends (we all need to shop right?), getaway from the kids for a while (they can’t see what you are buying them anyway), and embrace the holiday spirit (or at least embrace some spirits ;).)

Wrapped in Wonder -- Shopping at the Tanger Outlets during a Girl's Weekend at Foxwoods Resort in CT

I joined fellow bloggers at a #WrappedinWonder event hosted by blogging superstars Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeney. We started off our day shopping at the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods. Now I have a great outlet mall just 25 minutes from my house, but those are outdoors and always so, so crowded.

Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods is home to 80 different outlet stores including H&M, LOFT, UGG, Nike, Banana Republic, J. Crew, and many more. Parking was easy in an indoor parking garage, much better than circling the aisles at my local outlet mall. After a quick walk through the casino, I was soon inside the Tanger Outlets — warm, comfortable and coat-free. If I got tired of carrying my bags, I could check them at guest services counters at either end of the outlets instead of going back and forth to my car to drop packages. If I was staying at the hotel, they would even bring them up to my room for me! But best of all — no long lines at registers, no crowds to weave through, and no store displays destroyed by frantic shoppers.

Eventually, everyone can get a little tired of shopping, so we stopped off at the casino bar for some tasty treats and drinks while we had our gifts wrapped by some helpful elves. If we really wanted to live it up, we could have checked out some of Foxwoods’ many fine dining options, like David Burke’s Prime or picked up some of the best cheesecake ever at Junior’s.

Since we were there to kick off the holiday season in style, we stepped outside into Foxwoods’ winter wonderland and outdoor skating rink. I visited the Foxwoods’ rink last year with Hannah at its season opening and, despite my lack of skating skills, I found it just the thing to put me in the holiday mood. While it was nice to be there at night last year to enjoy the 100,000 lights that surround the rink, we couldn’t complain about the gorgeous 60 degree, sunny afternoon to ice skate without a jacket.
