Do you remember the days when a beach vacation meant claiming your beach spot early, turning your chair to face the sun, and flipping every 30 minutes? I miss those days. I also miss the bikini body I had back then too, but I’m not sure either are coming back. With kids, I’ve found that it is better to keep busy because there are only so many sand castles that I can build. So I like a beach destination that has plenty of activities and can offer me a good value of my vacation budget.

Daytona Beach in Florida offers plenty of value-packed adventures and what they offer for families may just surprise you! I remember my very first trip to Daytona Beach. I was 12 years old and we had driven from New Jersey to Florida to visit the theme parks. On our way back, we stopped at Daytona Beach. What stuck with me from that trip was how wide and long the beach was. Well, and that you could drive on it, I had never seen that before!

It is no surprise that Daytona Beach is known as the “Original American Beach.” In addition to 23 miles of coastline, Daytona Beach is also home to NASCAR, the Daytona International Speedway, the LPGA and over 60 art, music and pop culture festivals. Plus, you don’t need to pay to access the beach (value!)

Daytona Beach for Families

Daytona Beach offers plenty to keep families busy including:

  • Paddleboarding — when I think of Daytona Beach, I think of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and paddle boarding doesn’t immediately come to mind. But Daytona Beach also has plenty of backwater estuaries that are perfect for stand up paddle boarding. Hannah and I first tried this last summer and I’m determined to get better at it, but I want to practice where it is calm and pretty and the estuaries sound perfect!
  • Kayaking — if you have followed this blog for a while, you will notice that kayaking is one of our favorite water sports. Probably because I’m too much of a chicken for anything too daring, but I love the peacefulness of kayaking. Plus any vacation where I can fit in a little exercise and get out on the water is a bonus in my book!Kayaking in Daytona Beach
  • Surfing — Hannah is a bit more of a daredevil than I am and after trying surfing a couple of years ago, she has been clamoring to do it again. I love that there are surf camps for kids in Daytona Beach where you can learn from the pros!
  • Parasailing — we have gone parasailing in Florida a couple of times and I love that you never know quite what you will see from above (we once spotted a sea turtle swimming along). That 23-miles of coastline must make for spectacular views from above.
  • Boating — Daytona Beach really offers a range of boating options from pontoon river cruises, airboat gator tours, to fishing charters.
  • Biking — there are rental options galore from bikes to golf carts to scooters to Segways, there are plenty of options for getting around on wheels.Daytona Beach boardwalk
  • Boardwalk fun — as a Jersey girl, what would a beach vacation be without some boardwalk fun? Daytona Beach offers a boardwalk and pier with rides, games, and an arcade — plus the giant Slingshot. They also host a fireworks display every Saturday night at 9:45 pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
  • Ponce de Leon Inlet lighthouse — of course I like to blend a little history and culture into every trip, so I’d also include a trip out to the Ponce de Leon Inlet lighthouse. Just a few miles south of Daytona Beach, you will find the tallest lighthouse in Florida — a “not so hidden” gem.Ponce de Leon lighthouse

One of the nicest things about Daytona Beach is also how centrally located it is. Located smack dab in the center of the Atlantic coastline, Daytona Beach is only around an hour to Orlando, Kennedy Space Center, or historic St. Augustine. This makes it easy to incorporate a day trip into your Daytona Beach stay.
