Canadian Roadtrip Stop #2: Niagara-on-the-Lake

While only 30 minutes away, Niagara-on-the-Lake seems worlds away from Niagara Falls. Compared to the kitsch of Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake is the ideal romantic weekend getaway destination. Located right on Lake Ontario, the town is filled with inns, cafes, shops, and flower-lined streets. There are plenty of bike trails along the lake and more wineries in Niagara than you could hit in a week.

Visiting Wineries in Niagara on the Lake

We only spent a few hours in Niagara-on-the-Lake (partly due to a GPS malfunction that sent us across the bridge to the USA and stuck in two hours of traffic at the border crossings), but I would love to go back with just my husband for a weekend. After our traffic delay, we started the day at Peller Estates, the largest wine manufacturer in Canada. We began with lunch and wine pairings on the terrace at the Peller Estates Restaurant. After our large dinner the night before, I wasn’t hungry enough for the tasting menus so I settled on the seared sea scallops and crispy polenta in lobster saffron bouillabaisse.  I enjoyed it, but a bite of my daughter’s roasted pork loin with black truffle gnocchi made me wish I had ordered that instead.

Following lunch we joined the wine tour and tasting for a bit of history and wine education. There we learned about how they produce ice wine, use roses as early detectors against mold, and how barn swallows keep away the sparrows that eat the grapes.  After some time in the vineyard we headed down to the wine cellar for a tasting of the Pinot Gris, Merlot and Ice Wine.  Even though the region is famous for their sweet ice wine, it wasn’t for me.  However, we did purchase a couple of bottles of the Pinot Gris.

After our tour we headed into town for some browsing.  Again, we were amazed by the botanical bounty in town.  We were charmed by the horse and carriages and surprised by how many outdoor cafes there were in Ontario. We did a little shopping but then took a walk down to the lake. I’m glad we did because we were able to really take in the vastness of the lake.

Unfortunately, the time to move on came to soon and we continued on to our hotel in Toronto where we were staying the night.  Luckily, this time the GPS worked and traffic wasn’t too bad so we were in Toronto in about an hour and a half.

Ice wine is sooo sweet. It’s nice on a hot summer day but not a wine I can regularly drink. I did find the way they make very interesting – one grape produces only one drop of wine.

I agree Elaine, too sweet for me! They do work hard to produce it though with the short harvest and how many grapes are needed.

My favourite town! You should return and stay overnight – in the summer when you can take in a show at the Shaw Festival and have a Cows Ice Cream cone!

The Shaw festival sounds great. I would definitely love to go back. Thanks for the tips!
