Why You Should Plan a Trip to Punta Cana this Winter 404 Shares Share390 Pin12 Tweet1 Stumble1 Flip This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Apple Vacations. All opinions are 100% mine. I know the recent destruction caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria have caused some to second-guess planning a trip to the Caribbean. The impact of these storms has been tragic and will be felt for many years to come. But as I described in my recent post about which areas were affected and where you can go now, these hurricanes only affected about 15 percent of all the hotel rooms in the Caribbean. The Caribbean spans nearly one million square miles. A large percentage of islands were not affected, or only sustained minimal damage. Yet all of the islands rely on tourism for their economic prosperity. One way to help those islands that have been affected is by donating to Tourism Cares or the Hispanic Federation, both of which send 100 percent of the donations to affected areas. The other is by booking a trip to unaffected, or already recovered islands, to help support the local economies. Unlike the damage sustained on the similarly-sounding island of Dominica, the Dominican Republic came through relatively unscathed. The north side of the island was only brushed by the strong winds of the hurricanes, which stayed out at sea. This means that the Dominican Republic’s beaches are open and waiting for visitors, especially in Punta Cana, one of the island’s most popular resort areas – making this winter the best time to visit Punta Cana. Why You Should Visit Punta Cana Not only was Punta Cana untouched by the recent hurricanes, it is also a perfect spot for a winter vacation. Sometimes referred to as the “Coconut Coast,” Punta Cana is known for its white sandy beaches and vast array of resorts, including all-inclusives ranging from adults only to kid-focused properties like the Nickelodeon Resort. In Punta Cana, they try to preserve the environment by avoiding high-rise hotels, so you won’t find any hotel taller than the highest palm tree. We visited the Punta Cana area this past summer when Glenn and I took a rare “parent only” getaway while Hannah was at camp. We stayed at the Eden Roc in Cap Cana and completely fell in love. The water was clear and soft, perfect for bobbing in the waves and for people like me who like to see what is in the water around them. The beach was gorgeous, perfect white sand dotted with green palm trees and views. Just thinking about it brings me back to that island feeling of relaxation, with palm fronds rustling overhead and a cold pina colada in my hand. This nice thing about Punta Cana is that if you don’t want to spend all your time on the beach, you don’t need to. The area is known for its world-class golf and is home to twenty-eight amazing golf courses. Punta Cana is also home to great restaurants, casinos, and world-class spas. If adventure is more your thing, nearby you can go zip lining, visit underground cenotes, take a 4×4 out to see waterfalls, or go horseback riding. On the water, you can go fishing, boating, snorkeling, and more. There is certainly something for everyone and no one needs to feel like they are “trapped on the resort.” Getting to Punta Cana One of the reasons we chose Punta Cana for our summer getaway was how easy it is to get to. For some Caribbean islands, you might spend all day connecting through increasingly smaller airports. There are many direct flights from U.S. cities on a number of airlines, including Southwest and JetBlue.
