Top 20 NYC Mobile Apps for Tourists

If you are traveling to NYC with your family sometime soon, here are some NYC mobile apps you might want to download before you go.

NYC Mobile apps

NYC Apps for Getting Around

1.  Apple Maps or Google Maps — I especially like the walking directions in Google Maps

2.  City Transit — offers transit maps as well as detailed lists of stops by subway line.  You can also use the locate feature to find nearby subway stations.

3.  HopStop — provides detailed maps for subway, busses, train, taxi, walking and biking, including nearby station searches, station-by-station schedules, and real-time transit information (especially helpful on weekends when many lines shut down or switch tracks.)

4.  Central Parking and Icon Parking — helps you find nearby parking garage.  Just remember, as I mentioned in the first NYC post, you need to print coupons before you leave as they don’t except mobile coupons.

5.  Sit or Squat — find bathrooms nearby and read reviews (good when traveling with little ones!)

Sightseeing Apps

1.  NYC Museum — helps you find and learn more about NYC’s many museums

2.  Museum Quest — the ultimate guide for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this app offers turn by turn directions and you’ll be asked to identify fabulous art objects along the way by finding the answers to clues presented to you in riddle form. You’ll find many of the museum’s masterpieces and treasures. The answers are given in a fun and amusing context written by professional art historians.

3.  Explorer — this app lets you chart your own course at the American Museum of Natural History, providing turn-by-turn directions with a variety of Museum-designed tours or create your own from a list of popular exhibits, specimens, or artifacts.

4. 911 Memorial Guide and Explore 9/11 — The 9/11 Memorial Guide app helps visitors to the 9/11 Memorial understand the layout of the Memorial itself. Explore 9/11 offers a seven-stop walking tour of the area around the World Trade Center, accompanied by audio and photo narration. You can also view images related to the events of 9/11 and their aftermath taken nearby, and explore an interactive timeline of the day’s events and aftermath.

5.  TKTS — get real-time listings of all Broadway and Off Broadway shows and find out which tickets are available at the TKTS Discount Booths in New York City.

6.  History HERE — an interactive travel guide to thousands of historic locations across the United States (this app helped a lot when exploring Lower Manhattan)

7.  TripAdvisor City Guides (NYC) — online and offline city guide with the restaurants, attractions, hotels and reviews including trip journals and self-guided tours.

Where to Eat

1.  Urbanspoon — find nearby restaurants by shaking the phone or lock down the neighborhood, cuisine, and/or price range to narrow the results.

2.  OpenTable — make online reservations, read reviews and find nearby restaurants

3.  Eat St — find local food trucks

4.  MapMuse Top Chef Restaurant Locator — find restaurants featured on the Top Chef TV show or from show contestants/judges

5.  Yelp — find nearby restaurants, read reviews
