Old-World Charm and Modern Amenities at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV

The Bavarian Inn, located in the scenic college town of Shepherdstown, WV, is a country inn that combines old-world charm with modern elegance. When I first pulled into the Inn’s parking lot, I wasn’t sure what to make of the contrast between the stone mansion that housed registration and the scattering of outbuildings decorated in Bavarian style murals. But as I stepped into the small, yet formal, lobby, it was clear that while some buildings had outdoor entrances to hotel rooms, this was not an old-fashioned motel but an elegant alpine-style inn. For my Bavarian Inn review, all it took was one peek at the infinity pool that overlooked the scenic Potomac River below to recognize that the hotel also offered modern amenities.

Location

The Bavarian Inn is located in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia, just an hour from Washington D.C. and Baltimore, and minutes from Harpers Ferry and the Civil War battlefield at Antietam, making it a perfect home base for exploring historical sites in the area. Nearby Shepherdstown is home to Shepherdstown University, and has the appeal of a small college town, just a short walk or less than five minute drive away.

Many rooms at the Inn offer stunning views of the Potomac River and the beautiful greenery that flank the river.

Amenities

The Bavarian Inn’s infinity pool

The Inn’s 11-acre grounds offer guests a gorgeous infinity pool and poolside bar, a tennis court, and multiple formal and casual dining options. The pool had the feel of a luxury resort, with soft, fluffy towels available poolside. Plus the stylish poolside bar offers drinks, snacks, salads and sandwiches.

For more elegant options, guests can opt for the more formal, pricier Greystone Mansion, which offers classic German and American dishes. The Inn has won Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” for its winning wine list, containing over 600 different labels.

Accommodations

The Bavarian Inn offers 72 rooms, many of which feature gas fireplaces and whirlpool baths. We stayed in Room 20 in the Bodensee building, just steps from the pool and offering a beautiful view of the Potomac River from our balcony. Even though the door opened to the outside (not a favorite of mine), it was up a short set of stairs and set back versus directly on a parking lot or a long walkway. Inside, the room was so much larger than I would have expected and a small alcove at the entry gave even more noise protection and privacy.

Bodensee Room 20

The bathroom was quite large, with a vanity outside of the bathroom, and a large sink vanity, walk-in shower, and whirlpool bath inside. The room itself was quite spacious, with a king-size bed, desk, wardrobe, and small loveseat in front of a gas-burning fireplace. Outside the backdoor was a small patio with patio furniture to enjoy a morning coffee while soaking in the view of the river.
